Every year, over 100,000 horses are sold to slaughter houses for human consumption. Some of these horses are sent from auctions in the states, but many from right here in Canada. Draft horses are shipped to Japan and other countries overseas who "like it raw" so to speak. Many assume that these horses are old, sick or unsafe. This couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, most are young, quiet broke to ride horses who have done nothing but faithfully serve us as human beings. The bigger and healthier the horse, the more meat their is to sell. Horses who are sent to slaughter, endure unthinkable treatment both along the way, as well as once at the slaughter house. Although there are federal laws in place for these horses to be treated "humanely", they are subjected to spending days on a truck, or in the case of the horses shipped over seas, hours on a plane, without food or water and crammed in crates until they are literally on top of each other. This causes fights, injury and sometimes death. Once arriving at their destination they are hit with batons to get them into their kill pens. They often slip and become injured in these pens. They are stunned with a gun, but this doesn't always work the first time. It can take up to 18 seconds between the first, second and sometimes third stun. The suffering in this time between is unimaginable. They are then hoisted up in chains, skinned and gutted. Many people are not aware that this is happening right in our own back yard.
