Happy New Year, supporters! Checking in with another update on the progress toward instituting a once-per-month free/low-cost community movie night in the theatre, an action item for residents of and visitors to Avalon, an important disclaimer, and some press.
Monthly Community Movie Night
Things appear to be coming along! We understand that the City of Avalon and the Island Company have made progress and have or are close to finalizing an agreement by which the Island Company will make the theatre available to the City once per month to host a movie night for the community. We couldn’t be more grateful or thrilled that Island kids will continue to have an opportunity to experience the wonder and beauty of the Avalon Theatre.
We have learned that once the terms of this arrangement are defined and agreed upon, the matter will be placed on the agenda for the next city council meeting scheduled for January 21, 2020. This brings us to our (hopefully) final ask of you, dear supporters….
Action Items!
Although we expect enthusiastic and unanimous support for this plan from the city council, we know that during previous discussions some council members have expressed reservations/concerns about the propriety and feasibility of City involvement with the theatre.
If you live in Avalon and you support the City and the Island Company working together to open the theatre once a month for the community to enjoy, please let the Avalon City Council know! The City Council represents you but they cannot do that very well if they don’t know how their constituents feel about an issue. There are two EASY and QUICK ways to let them know that you fully support the City opening the theatre for the community (especially the kids) of Avalon to enjoy every month:
1. Send a quick email!
You can email all the City Council reps using the addresses pasted below. Alternatively, you can just email the City Manager, Denise Radde, and she will relay your correspondence to the councilmembers at the next meeting. Easy Peasy!

If you’d like to copy our group so that we can keep a record of the correspondence, you may do so using the following address: keeptheavalontheatreopen@gmail.com
2. Show up to the next city council meeting!
If you are free next Tuesday evening, January 21, 2020 @ 5:00, please consider attending the next city council meeting. Meetings are held in the City Hall Council Chambers, located at 410 Avalon Canyon Road. Your presence is all that is required but if you wish to voice your support, each meeting includes a time for public comment during which anyone is invited to speak on matters of public concern.
Please consider taking one or both of these actions to show your support for this effort and please tell your friends!
Disclaimer
We understand that recently an individual/group interested in operating the theatre as a nonprofit announced a crowdfunding campaign for their proposed organization. Although we fully support anyone making legitimate efforts to keep the theatre open and operating for all to enjoy, we feel the need to state here that we are not at this time formally affiliated with any such effort and we are not presently soliciting or accepting--and we have not at any time solicited or accepted--any donations for the theatre.
