Although my son is currently in active recovery, there are countless individuals and families struggling through the system today, attempting to get help and assist their children and getting them the treatment they desperately need. This has been a very long tough road and many struggling in this arena have lost their children to overdose. The heroin /prescription drug abuse health crisis has reached epidemic levels in this country. Although there are new models of treatment in the making, along with alternative therapies for abuse interventions in promising reform, things are not changing soon enough. children who are over the age of 18 and in the crux of addiction, many times need help from family, friends, and loved ones. Don't wait for the addict to hit bottom, they could die. people with most life-threatening illnesses will do whatever they can to figure out what's wrong and treat their disease. They don't need convincing to go to the doctor. They want to get well. Addiction comes with cognitive impairments in denial which in turn, makes it obviously impossible to seek help, let alone take on the advocacy role that they need to provide for themselves to get through the many dead ends and revolving doors of the medical systems. If not for their denial, they would be impelled to do what their bodies tell them not to do: find a way to stop. Every day you wait, addicts' drug use may escalate. By allowing them to keep using , family memberscand friends conspire with addiction, even encourage it to advance --enabling the addict. As a result of not being able to advocate for our children and friends over the age of eighteen, the addiction can advance to the point of killing them. As a fierce advocate, I had many known avenues and networking knowledge but still found myself frantic with fear and exhausted with the phone calls and places to reach out in getting help.
