Make the Library of Congress Enter 1993's Cool Runnings into the National Film Registry

The Issue

The 1993 Jon Turteltaub classic Cool Runnings deserves official recognition in the National Film Registry. Loosely based on the tale of the original 1988 Jamaican bobsleigh team, the film depicts a powerful tale of triumph over adversity, underdogs proving themselves as equals on a global stage, and redemption on the part of the American coach, so skillfully and warmly portrayed by a Canadian who is no less a treasure of American cinema: the late, great John Candy.

Though a largely fictionalized account, the core of the story demonstrates well the struggles of a real team that no one counted on, competing in a sport that no one expected. Mocked and jeered, the team persevered and created a well respected institution that lives on to this day.

Amid this stunning drama, the film remains a warm-hearted picture suited to the whole family. This, in no small part, due to the perennially comical style, as well as the warmth and kindness of Mr. Candy. Largely revered as one of the finest comedic minds of his generation, John Candy left an indelible mark on our culture and an irreplaceable void when he passed. Cool Runnings remains a high point of his career, and one of the most recognizable American films of the late 20th century, especially in the realm of sports. As such, we submit that it be given careful consideration for entry by the Library of Congress into the National Film Registry.

Thank you.
