HI! All!  We are slowly inching towards the goal of 5,000 signatures. While we are in a public health caregiver crisis, it is only going to get worse over the next 10 years.

The impending shift in America’s demographic landscape, marked by the aging of the baby boomer generation, is a clarion call to action. This monumental transition will have profound implications on our healthcare system, the economy, and the very fabric of family caregiving.

Census shift in next 6 years

As we stand on the cusp of 2030, when all baby boomers will be over 65, we must confront a stark reality: the number of older adults is set to surge, constituting 21% of the population. By 2060, this percentage will climb even higher, with a striking increase in those aged 85 and above, and a significant rise in centenarians. This demographic shift is not just a number; it represents a multitude of lives needing increased medical attention, assistance in daily living, and compassionate care.

Decline in Working Age Adults

The growing aging population is juxtaposed with a concerning trend – the decline in younger, working-age adults. This imbalance will strain our Social Security system and exacerbate the already critical shortage of direct care workers. The financial burden will inevitably shift to family caregivers, who are unprepared and unsupported for such a demanding role.

The financial impact of this demographic shift is profound. With fewer young people to support the aging population, the economic pressure mounts. Family caregivers are often forced to leave their jobs or reduce their working hours, leading to a loss of income and benefits, including their own healthcare. This loss is not just an individual burden; it echoes throughout the economy.

Medicare and Medicare Advantage have increasing copays and out of pocket expenses

Moreover, the existing healthcare framework, particularly Medicare Advantage plans, is increasingly burdening our seniors and their caregivers. High copays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses are barriers to accessing necessary healthcare. These financial hurdles are not merely inconveniences; they can lead to the forgoing of essential treatments and services.

The White House National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers, while a step forward, falls short in addressing these critical issues. Tax credits offer little solace to those without income. The glaring omission of provisions for respite care in the strategy overlooks the dire need for temporary relief for caregivers. Mental health benefits, though well-intentioned, may be out of reach due to prohibitive copays, especially for low-income caregivers.

Family caregivers, often the unsung heroes, contribute immensely – over $650 billion in unpaid care. Yet, they are left to struggle without adequate financial compensation or support. The lack of affordable respite care and the overwhelming responsibilities leave them unable to care for themselves, leading to physical and emotional burnout.

As we look towards the future, it is essential to recognize that the wellbeing of our aging population and the sustainability of caregiving lie in our collective hands. The White House Conference on Aging, which sets the agenda for the next decade, is a critical platform to address these challenges. It is imperative that family caregivers and direct care workers unite, raising their voices to advocate for necessary changes.

The time to act is now.

We must not only acknowledge the challenges faced by family caregivers and the aging population but also take decisive steps to address them. I urge you to share and sign the Caregiver Relief Petition, a movement advocating for the rights and support of family caregivers and direct care workers. Together, we can make a difference in shaping a future that respects, supports, and values the indispensable role of caregivers in our society.

Please sign and share this petition. Please share your challenges here - we are collecting caregiver stories to share and create public awareness on the challenges and lack of affordable respite care.
