Kwey Petition Members,
As I wait to hear from the Ontario Court of Appeal regarding Indigenous Affairs and Northern Canada's (INAC) application of their unstated paternity policy to me - have a look at the policy.
You will notice that it is laden with assumptions and sex-discrimination in that it imposes harm on mothers and children, and it offers no options for situations where the father is unknown due to rape, gang rape, sexual slavery ... . In short, when the father's signature is not on the child's birth certificate INAC assumes the man is a non-Indian. Through this policy assumption many children are denied Indian status registration and thus their treaty rights.
Lynn
** Note: INAC's naming of the policy is misleading and it is best known as INAC's unknown, unstated, unrecognized paternity policy.
