Federal Members of Parliament will soon vote on a bill to designate May 20 as National Seal Products Day, I am asking Canada to vote against bill-s 208.

I am writing to voice my concern about the proposal for National Seal Products Day. Since learning about the seal hunt, I came to realize that this topic reflects poorly on our beautiful province and country. I understand that the seal hunt was once an important and vital part of Newfoundland history and culture but it does not hold the same value today.

Currently, the industry slaughters between 30,000 and 66,000 seals per year, although the quota is set at over 400,000. Clearly, there is a lack of demand and interest in the product, seal meat is not a staple in the Newfoundland diet and it is a fact that most seals are killed for fur. Why do we allow this to happen? Canada does not need seal products, instead we should focus on providing real support for Newfoundlanders living in rural communities - support for viable and sustainable jobs.

According to a blacklocks report, the seal hunt ran a two-million-dollar deficit after calculating the export value and the cost of monitoring the hunt. The seal hunt is very unstable, year after year markets for seal products get smaller – ten years ago numbers of landed pelts exceeded 300,000, a number that is no longer achievable after the European Union ban.

Our government still continues to spend money lobbying against the ban, however, it is evident that countries are willing to defend their ethics and hold the ban for many years to come.

I love my province and my country, I take pride in where I am from but I am not proud of the commercial seal hunt. If this bill is approved, May 20th will be a day of shame. Please vote against bill-s 208.
