Abolish Section 296 (Blasphemy Law) from The Canadian Criminal Code

Abolish Section 296 (Blasphemy Law) from The Canadian Criminal Code
The Issue
Is a god that weak that he/she/it would need us to enforce a law that punishes people for hurting their feelings?
And by the way, which god are we talking about here?
This law is not only stagnant but it is a medieval man made cruel method of practice used to silence anyone that was deemed to be of a different opinion/stance and thus posed as a threat to those in power.
This same law was repealed by the U.K in 2008 shortly after it was successfully used in court.
The United States has no such law because it would violate the American constitution. Yet here we are in Canada (the world’s melting pot) with a blasphemy law in our books.
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms lists
-
freedom of conscience and religion;
-
freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication
As fundamental freedoms. How can we then maintain a blasphemy law at the same time that is aimed at persecuting anyone who chooses to express their thoughts in writing or verblaly regarding religion or any god?
It should not matter that this law appears to be "dead" and unused in 80 years. This is not a valid argument because anyone could come along and resurrect it. If it is truly a dead and unused law then let us bury it. Forever.
Let us now focus on human rights and necessities rather than harm each other in the name of deities.
Canada has been a safe haven for an endless number of people who found refuge in this land from the religious persecution they face in their own countries. How can we knowingly accept to have such a hypocritical stance.
How can we criticize countries for violating human rights when they detain/imprison people, destroy lives and ruin families because a deity was seen to have been challenged or insulted?
Are gods this fragile? and if so, are they worthy?
This petition on it’s own can be viewed as blasphemous and thus it is the perfect way to challenge section 296 of our Canadian Criminal Code.
