Canada To Recognise Search And Rescue With A Service Medal

Canada To Recognise Search And Rescue With A Service Medal

The Issue

My name is Nicholas Kerr I am a member of Juan De fuca Search and Rescue located in lower Vancouver Island British Columbia. I am sending this out asking my fellow Search and Rescue brothers and sisters and the general public for help. I am conducting a research paper and petition on search and rescue (in no way negative strictly promoting Search and Rescue) and will be presenting this paper and petition when completed to the Chancellery of Honours within the Governor Generals Office. My goal is to achieve between 5000 and 10,000 signatures and for this paper/petition to show that Search and Rescue is eligible for a national Service Medal. I strongly feel that this award is long overdue for Search and Rescue since the following services are awarded a service medal.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Long Service Medal 20 years’ service

Canadian Forces Decoration (full time and reserve) 12 years’ service

Police Exemplary Service Medal 20 years’ service

Fire Service Exemplary Service Medal (fulltime and volunteer) 20 years’ service

Canadian Coast Guard Exemplary Service Medal (fulltime and volunteer) 20 years’ service

Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal 20 years’ service

Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal (volunteer RCMP eligible) 20 years’ service Service Medal of the St. John of Jerusalem (a volunteer service medal) 12 years’ service

Corrections Exemplary Service Medal, Commissionaires Long Service Medal 12 years’ service

Most of these services listed SAR works alongside with pulling long hours and aiding them or them aiding SAR in mutual aid calls. The information that I gather will not be shared and will be fully confidential and will strictly only be sent to the Governor Generals office.
