On February 7, 2018, Liberal MP and lawyer Nathaniel Erskine-Smith @beynate stood up in Parliament and said that he considered the actions he saw in the video to be criminal. He said that abuses in slaughterhouses are "rampant," and implored the government to act. Barbi Lazarus of the Toronto Vegetarian Association wrote an incredible letter to the Prime Minister and has kindly given us permission to use the letter for a petition update. We encourage everyone to send the letter below to the Prime Minister at this email address: justin.trudeau@parl.gc.ca Dear Prime Minister Trudeau, I was horrified to view real and recent video footage of the Ryding-Regency slaughterhouse just down the road from my home in the West end of Toronto. The video shows blatant violation of Canada’s animal slaughter legislation including a large brown cow thrashing about on the floor, trying to get up, as blood gushes out of a gaping wound on her neck, and a black-and-white cow similarly struggling on the floor, while a worker bends over and cuts her throat. Cows are hoisted upside down, dangling from one leg, while still clearly conscious with their eye lids opening and closing, while workers tear off the skin from their faces with knives. I urge you to have the courage to view the video for yourself and see that it is real. I demand that you hold the CFIA accountable and ensure that Canada’s animal welfare legislation is enforced. I am sure you can not in good conscience allow this to continue and trust you will take swift action to ensure this cruelty in Canada is not allowed to continue.
