It has been a week since my last update when we hit 50,000 supporters and we are now closing in on 75,000 signatures. Clearly, this issue is continuing to resonate with Canadians across our country.
I would like to thank both Joanne Lee-Young from the Vancouver Sun and Olivia Hnatyshyn from the Ottawa Citizen for writing excellent articles highlighting our petition and the plight of small income tax preparation firms. Both of their articles focused on how this issue has disproportionately impacted women. Oliva's article quoted me, "I found it ironic that the Department of Finance is constantly touting 'gender equity' in taxation and as soon as I see a real issue that impacts women, nothing gets done".
Also, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to Elaine Christine Okimura of Toronto who yesterday posted in the comment section of our petition that she lost a family member who became infected with Covid when they left their home to get their tax return prepared.
With one week left in tax preparation season, we will continue to plead with the government for some sort of short filing extension or at least an automatic waiver of penalties and interest for those that file by June 15th.
Thanks again for your continued support and please take care.
