I have submitted a complaint/request for investigation with the Office of the Alberta Ombudsman. My complaint concerns systemic, provincial-level decision-making and failure to respond to documented emergency access concerns. [You may read the letter in full below!]. {context}
In December 2025, the Government of Alberta enacted major legislative changes restructuring the provincial health system. The Office of the Auditor General of Alberta has publicly stated that these changes are "unprecedented and that their effects on healthcare outcomes are unknown"
Specifically:
- Implementation of large-scale restructuring while emergency access pressures were already documented.
- Absence of substantive written engagement from the Premier and Minister of Health after formal correspondence.
- Substitution of an in-person town hall invitation for formal administrative response.
- Reduction or limitation of publicly accessible data necessary to evaluate emergency access performance.
I have respectfully request that the Ombudsman investigate:
- Whether the Government of Alberta acted reasonably in implementing healthcare restructuring despite acknowledged uncertainty of impact.
- Whether adequate safeguards were in place to prevent foreseeable harm to patient access.
- Whether failure of substantive ministerial response constitutes maladministration.
- Whether current administration of healthcare services remains fair, transparent, and consistent with obligations to the public.
