It’s official! Canada has banned the import and export of shark fins, ending our participation in the cruel shark fin trade. This is a huge victory for sharks and the many people who have been working tirelessly to save them. None of this would have been possible without the support of more than 300,000 advocates and we thank every single one of you. More than ten thousand of you rose to the challenge when asked to contact government officials and today, we prove that together we can make a difference. We also thank the many advocacy groups and politicians who joined together to champion a ban of this harmful practice. We applaud everyone’s efforts, including Senator Michael MacDonald who initiated and championed Bill S-238, and Member of Parliament Fin Donnelly who has shown dedication and leadership on this issue over consecutive governments. The provisions in the Bill were made law through the passage of Bill C-68, which amended the Fisheries Act. The amended Fisheries Act is one of the most transformative things that has happened for our oceans in many years. For the first time since it was enacted in 1868, it makes rebuilding wild fish the law. Read our full statement at oceana.ca. We’d love to keep in touch with you about sharks and ocean conservation as we continue our work to save the oceans.
