This is where you come in (literally)

Yes, this story involves you, because you have the power to add curvature to it. Curvature? So glad you asked.

The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. — Martin Luther King Jr.

Since I last wrote, things haven't changed much—at least on the face of it. President Phil Ryken and the Wheaton College board of trustees have done basically nothing to address the core requests of this petition. They seem to be uncomfortable with such a bright light shining on past misdeeds and present silence, but do not seem inclined to do the next right thing. They might not have to. We do live in a moral universe, but inaction makes the local arc look more like flatlining. We can do better than that.

This is where you come in

A protest has been scheduled here in Wheaton:

When: Saturday, October 3 (Homecoming Weekend) at 10:00 a.m.
Where: The meeting begins at the fountain in Adams Park, near the corner of Main and Wesley.

I plan to be there, as do Kathy (Massaro) Gallagher, Julie Roys of Roys Report, and others who would like to see the arc of this particular story not merely bend toward justice, but end with justice.

You can help make that happen by attending the protest yourself (if you live within traveling distance) and encouraging others to attend, too—even if you yourself cannot. Spread the word. If you’d like, bring a sign, but that's optional. What matters is that we show up and, with our presence, make it clear that we want justice for those wounded by what Dennis Massaro and Wheaton College have done.

A confession

I'm not a "bring your pitchfork to the rally" kind of guy. Protests are not generally my cup of tea. But I believe in justice, and sometimes my only tangible means of voting in its favor is simply to show up. I've voted in other intangible ways by writing this petition and posting things on social media. You've done your part by signing this petition and forwarding it. That's great, but we can do better.

This protest is our opportunity to go beyond "slacktivism" and demonstrate in person, to a watching world, that we care. Sometimes the difference is simply in showing up. Our presence at the protest will matter to Kathy and her family as well as the other victims of sexual abuse at Wheaton College, in Turkey, and elsewhere.

Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends than that good men should look on and do nothing. — John Stuart Mill
