PAKISTAN: Call to release a Hindu human rights defender who is disappeared after his arrest

The international Human Rights Commission-HK is concerned about the report that a Hindu activist and vice chairman of a Sndhi national organization is missing since January 5 along with his friend.

The vice chairman of Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM ) Mr. Ramesh Kumar along with his friend Ghulam Murtaza Shar, missing after his arrest by the men in uniforms from Jogi Shar Goth near Garhor Shareef, district, Sanghar Sindh province.

According to Jeay Sindh Mutehda Mahaz, Security agencies took Rameesh Kumar and his friend Ghulam Murtaza in custody on 5th January, 2019, when he was organizing meetings in regards to the birth anniversary of great Sindhi nationalist, Mr. G. M. Syed, former chief minister of Sindh and founder of Pakistan.

Ramesh Kumar son of Ramchand belongs to deprived class of Hindu Community as sub caste Meghwar,he belongs to very poor family of Tando Jan Mohammed taluqa of Mirpurkhas .He is by profession a engineer and had Bachelor degree in Electronics and telecommunication from Federal Urdu university Karachi. In 2006 he joined Jeay Sindh Student federation and later he was active in mother wing JSMM. Since 2013 he was central committee member later in 2016 as deputy secretary of Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz and since January 2018 as vice chairman of party. He is 3rd among 6 brothers in family. His father Ramchand is former by profession.

In a statement, chairman JSMM , Shafi Burfat stated that security agencies are abducting members , with impunity. The Chairman JSMM also claimed that thousands of Party workers, leaders , supporters and sympathizers have been disappeared and killed by Pakistan Secret Agencies.

The Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM) is among the 65 groups that have been declared proscribed in the past few years by the Ministry of Interior under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. The government had banned the JSMM in March 2013 for its alleged involvement in acts of province-wide violence, and put the name of its chief Shafi Burfat on the wanted list

Karachi’s Sindhi-populated neighborhoods are now on the radar screen, in order to protect Chinese interests in the city from being targeted.

We urge the authorities to immediately make it sure the safe and secured release of Mr. Ramesh Kumar and Mr. Ghulam Murtaza Shar. The government must stop the enforced disappearance and produce the detainees before the court of law if they have any criminal case against them.
