Why is this important?
An ACV designation gives the community first rights to buy the market if the current owners decide to sell it to another real estate investment company. Other London markets have received ACV designation, including Brixton Village, where the community is in the process of buying back the market to keep it in community hands.
What's at stake?
Yoo Capital, who own part of Shepherd's Bush Market, is a multibillion real estate developer registered in a tax haven. They plan to redevelop the market by overloading it with a 9 storey office building, between the market and Pennard Road. Their plans will also mean huge increases in rent for traders. This would effectively destroy Shepherd's Bush Market's future as an affordable and diverse market serving local people.
We need to send a clear message that any investment in the market should be for the benefit of the community it has served for over 100 years, not to line the pockets of a few wealthy investors.
