This petition was started in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022. It drew attention to the indirect support provided to Putin's regime by oil and natural gas projects in Russia owned in part by BP, Shell, and Exxon. The petition called on these companies to divest from Russia and thereby send a strong message to Putin that his violations of human rights and international law will not be tolerated. In the days since this petition was started on February 26th, BP, Shell, and (today) ExxonMobil have all announced plans to divest completely from their Russian assets. This was a big step on the part of these companies, and although it surely wasn't the result of this one change.org petition with only 61 signatures, the noise that we and many others collectively made expressing our opinions about this issue must have helped encourage these companies to take the actions they did. While this represents a step toward showing Putin that the world will not tolerate his aggression against Ukraine, more must be done to continue turning the tide of the fight towards the Ukrainians. Intense fighting is taking place for control of Ukrainian cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Mariupol, and others, and we must continue to looking for ways to help the Ukrainian people in any way we can. Sending my thanks to all who supported the petition, and hoping that one day we will see Ukrainians living in peace again free from attack.
