I’m excited to share an update on our petition - we have received an official response today from the Ministry of Public Safety on February 18th, 2025!  This is a huge accomplishment and a testament to the power of community voices coming together for change.

The Ministry’s Decisions:

Wildlife Warning Signs Installed – the Ministry of Transportation has taken action on our concerns by installing wildlife warning signs along this section of Highway 16 to alert drivers to potential hazards.

❗️ Highway Lighting Under Review – The ministry will be evaluating whether additional lighting is needed based on traffic patterns, collision history, and other key factors.

Wildlife Barriers Not Approved (For Now) – The ministry determined that this location does not currently meet the threshold for wildlife barriers, as they are focusing on higher-priority collision areas in BC.

What This Means:

The fact that we’ve gained the ministry’s attention and secured real action, with new signage already in place, is a major win!  Our concerns are being taken seriously, and this petition has helped bring much-needed awareness to this hazardous stretch of highway.

The ministry also shared this resource on how they work to protect both wildlife and drivers on B.C. highways:

Wildlife Matters on BC Highways

I will be staying in touch with Kevin Lutz, the local Operations Manager, for updates on the lighting review, and I’ll share any further developments as they come.

Thank You!

This progress would not have been possible without your support. Whether you signed, shared, or raised awareness, you helped make this happen. This is proof that when a community comes together, real change is possible!
