Your signature on the petition is supported by 4 out of 5 Canadians, but we need your help to reach them. The truth shared by the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation and Cowessess First Nation is likely the sad beginning of these discoveries. The TRC believes more than 6,000 children died at residential schools.

A survey commissioned by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation and the Assembly of First Nations following the gruesome discovery in Kamloops indicates that 93 per cent of Canadians are aware of the unsettling news.

Thirteen years after the Government of Canada offered a formal apology, 68 per cent of Canadians polled still say they were either unaware of the severity of abuses at residential schools or entirely shocked by it.  Two-thirds of people surveyed believe the level of education around residential schools should increase.

The majority of Canadians have definite views about who should take responsibility for the damage done by the residential school system. Ninety per cent of respondents assign blame to the federal government, followed by the Catholic Church (81%) and the RCMP (80%).

4 out of 5 Canadians would like to see the Pope formally apologize in Canada to the survivors of residential schools, which was the objective of launching this online petition.

If you have not already done so, please contact family members, friends, colleagues, and neighbours and ask them to sign and share his petition. Your continued support and effort is reconciliation in action.
