The Issue

We, the KZN Grade R educators, are deeply committed to the foundational education of our young learners. Despite our dedication and significant contribution to the development of Grade R learners across KwaZulu-Natal, we find ourselves marginalized by the system that should be supporting us. We seek the recognition we deserve through absorption into the mainstream education framework, which would ensure stability, fair remuneration, and acknowledgment of our professional status.

Our request is both sincere and justifiable. Grade R educators provide an essential service, preparing children for the academic journey that lies ahead. According to the Department of Education's own research, early childhood education is crucial for the cognitive, social, and emotional development of children. By not recognizing our efforts and failing to integrate us into the mainstream system, the Department misses an opportunity to enhance the quality of education from the very beginning.

The inequity of our current situation is glaring. While our colleagues in primary and secondary education enjoy the benefits of formal employment, many Grade R educators are left in precarious positions with insufficient pay and lack of job security. Acknowledging us within the formal structure is not just about fairness; it's about improving the educational system as a whole.

We propose a fair and transparent process for our absorption into the mainstream. This would include a review of qualifications, a clear pathway for professional development, and discussions about appropriate remuneration. Our solutions are practical and aimed at mutual benefits for educators, learners, and the educational system at large.

In light of these challenges, we feel compelled to organize a strike to voice our concerns and make our case heard. The strike would serve as a last resort to urge the education authorities to engage with us constructively. Our goal is not to disrupt but to build a more equitable system that recognizes the importance of Grade R education.

We urge all KZN Grade R educators to support this cause by signing this petition. Your signature is a step towards ensuring that our voices echo throughout the corridors of the Department of Education. Help us achieve justice and recognition for all Grade R educators. Sign the petition and stand with us as we work towards securing a brighter future for both educators and learners.
