Yesterday saw the commencement of the Royal Commission with royal commissioner Virginia Bell outlining the four main areas of investigation while also pointing out the limitations of the inquiry given the ongoing criminal trial of gunman Naveed Akram as well as delays in obtaining materials from law enforcement and intelligence agencies due to the fact that the Prime Minister had already called for the Richardson Review before agreeing to the royal commission. An interim report will be delivered by Apirl 30. I personally have a lot of reservations with the way this commission is unfolding and whether it will yield the results it really needs to. The fact that Anthony Albanese took so long to call it and then went on to give the commissioner a very limited time frame seriously impedes potential effectiveness. Australians are being asked to share their lived experience of antisemitsim and can make submissions by filling in an online form or email (they will not have to give evidence in public). Please follow me on instagram @marnieperlstein for regular updates and links which will make it quick and easy to make submissions. It is essential that we contribute in this way so that the commissioner undertands the full scope of issues for the Jewish community and for broader social cohesion. Thank you.
