We profusely thank you for being part of this movement.
After more than a decade of constructive civic engagement with the California Department of Education, Indian American and Hindu American communities won a significant victory On November 9th, in its quest for an accurate, equitable, and culturally competent portrayal of Indian civilization in California textbooks. Two problematic books which we had all demanded to be rejected were rejected. Last minute attempts by a fringe anti-India, anti-Hindu group to disrupt the process failed to deter the Board as parents and community leaders factually countered the group's hate-filled testimonials.
Thousands of Indian Americans made themselves heard through testimonials and letters and petition that you signed. Indians from diverse backgrounds including immigrant communities from Fiji and Caribbean, Hindus and Jain organizations, linguistic organizations, and Indian-Americans from all caste communities participated in this historic movement. The effort received support from our allies including Asian and Pacific Islander Americans, Jewish groups, and interfaith groups.
While the textbooks need further improvements, this victory marks a very significant step in Hindu American community's quest for bringing accuracy and cultural competency in textbooks.
