In a recent e-mail to its members, our allied organization The Climate Mobilization, wrote, regarding the Green New Deal Resolution recently issued in the House of Representatives and the Senate:
"The resolution is not perfect, however. It calls for reaching net zero emissions, but not for drawing down all excess greenhouse gases in order to a restore a safe climate. It does not comprehensively factor in or address the reality of humanity’s overshoot of ecological limits in areas beyond greenhouse gases. It relies on the deeply flawed Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, and calls for global zero emissions by 2050. This is way too late. In addition, the temperature targets set by the IPCC are irresponsible and could trigger runaway climate catastrophe. The earth is too hot right now and we need to stay well below 1.5C and then reverse global warming down to 0.5C or less to establish a safe climate. We encourage the Green New Deal authors and the climate movement to realize that the IPCC is not the right group to draw the parameters of our emergency climate response."
We agree with The Climate Mobilization statement and with scientists like, Michael Mann, Mario Molina, Veerabhadran Ramanathan, Durwood J. Zaelke, quoted in the recent article "The UN's Devastating Climate Change Report Was Too Optimistic", regarding the October, 2018 Report, that "the conservative (underestimating) nature of the IPCC", dangerously offers humanity more years to load the atmosphere with Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions, negating the reality that the atmosphere already has too much GHG and that, therefore, ALL ANTHROPOGENIC GHG EMISSIONS SHOULD BE STOPPED AS FAST AS MATERIALLY POSSIBLE, AND THAT EXCESS GHG, ALREADY IN THE ATMOSPHERE , SHOULD BE DRAWDOWNED.
We call on scientists like Mann, Molina, Zaelke, James Hansen, etc., to issue public statements saying:
1) "No more GHG should be emitted into the atmosphere", on the contrary, "Enough GHG should be removed from the atmosphere to restore global average temperatures to 0.5 º C, or less, above pre-industrial times".
2) "Regional Climate Change Adaptation must be deployed immediately to save life, infrastructure and the environment".
Saying that the IPCC Report “fails to adequately warn leaders” or that it is "overly conservative" is not enough. Scientists must tell the world what the real Climate Change situation is and what must be done in a hurry.
We have also attached the historical article "Losing Earth: The Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change" where you will learn about the critical decade of 1979-1989 when corporations and corrupt and misinformed politicians missed the greatest opportunity to spare humanity and the biosphere from the emergency (disaster) called Climate Change.
Keep on sending our message to the Governor: ACT NOW.
