Dear friends:
In a recent article in the local The Press Democrat newspaper (see attachment) a sincere construction industry representative in Sonoma County said that that the slogan "Sonoma Strong" coined after the disastrous October 2017 fire storms, has been underlined by SONOMA UNCERTAIN because the socio-economic-political system has not figured out how to respond with the speed and magnitude that a Climate Change-Related Disaster such as the unprecedentedly powerful fire storms requires.
The fire storms were a possibility in the minds of local and State governments that did not move them to prepare to mitigate them, fight them and recover quickly in the aftermath.
5283 homes were destroyed in Sonoma County alone during the October 2017 fire storms and the average insurance gap — the difference between the payout to residents for property lost in the disaster and the cost to rebuild — was $317,000, which amounts to a total average insurance gap close to $1.7 billion.
As a result of that very large average insurance gap and other factors, an increasing number of owners of destroyed homes are selling their lots to land speculators and only about 235 rebuilding permits have been issued.
Governments tend to be conservative by nature but its reluctance to face that Climate Change is what has hit us and that embracing it as the Major Disaster that ii is, is the only solution to totally focus on Climate Change and to be entitled to the State and Federal help badly needed, is a formula for a future of more destruction and suffering.
Keep on promoting this petition. With your help the number of signers has grown by 40% since April 30th, 2018 (25 days). Every new signature gets us closer to move Governor Jerry Brown to issue a Climate Change Major Disaster Declaration for California.
