Dear friends:
We found an article on the growing U. S. costs of Climate Change, featuring the super disaster hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
Their initial estimates are $290 billion for both hurricanes, and that is likely a low estimate considering that Harvey by itself will cost at least $190 billion.
The death toll is at over 70 people for Harvey and at over 65 people for Irma, and it keeps on climbing.
A tiny example of structural damage is the Florida Keys where Irma destroyed 25% of the homes and another 65% have major damage.
Our government leaders have been thinking that making massive Climate restoration and adaptation work to Climate Change is a lot more expensive than dealing with the Climate Change-related disasters as they come. Are they any closer to realizing that they have been WRONG?
Please keep these two facts in mind: 1) the slow feedbacks of Climate Change have accelerated and our Climate is very close to getting established in the changes for centuries or millennia (THIS IS VERY BAD), 2) As our infrastructure gets destroyed, our ability to make the necessary massive response gets weaker.
I am recalling a bumper sticker idea I had some years ago:
IF YOU THINK THAT CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION IS EXPENSIVE
TRY INACTION
What else than official Climate Change Major Disaster Declarations can save humanity and the planet from the scorch of Climate Change?
