The extremely backwards and damaging environmental decisions of President Donald Trump and his administration are helping to radicalize Climate Change Action public officials, environmental organizations and individuals who, until this Trump administration were content with the lukewarm Climate actions of the Obama administration and the false promises of the Paris Climate Agreement. Yes, it is very reproachable that Donald Trump has pulled out the U.S.A. from the Paris Climate Agreement because it is sending the message to the world that the United States Of America does not give a damn about Climate Change, but the reality of the agreement still is that the non-binding Greenhouse Gases Emissions reductions offered by the signatories would result in up to 3.7º Celsius increase of the global average temperatures, above pre-industrial temperature levels, by the end of the century (A disastrous warming). Organizations like the Union Of Concerned Scientists have started petitions and published press releases where they are asking governments to become Climate Action leaders and step up their actions. They do not specify the intensity and the timing of those actions, and do not specify how those governments are going to commit to those Climate Actions, but the level of their demands has gone up. Ten Governors and 187 U. S. Mayors have announced they would adopt the Paris Agreement of their own accord. One of those governors, Terry McAuliffe of Virginia, has recently exemplified the governor executive power that we identify in our petition, by issuing Executive Directive 11 that orders to set up a cap-and-trade system to cut greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. This Executive Directive is very far from the Climate Change Major Disaster Declaration we propose but it shows the public that such declaration is within the powers given to governors. I hope I have succeeded at conveying to you that the time is riper to achieve a Climate Change Major Disaster Declaration in California and elsewhere, in order to make Climate Change Action the North Star of our governments and societies. Climate Change MUST be defined as a Major Disaster to acknowledge that it is a “Life and Death” phenomenon, instead of a “nuisance” to be addressed with good-will gestures. Until the true urgency of the Climate Crisis is publicly recognized, we will continue postponing the total transformation of our economies that Climate Change requires, without which our societies will plunge in the chaos caused by a “New Climate” unfavorable to life. Get inspired to move your public officials (particularly governors, presidents and prime ministers) to issue Climate Change Major Disaster Declarations. CLIMATE CHANGE MAJOR DISASTER DECLARATION BY (name of public official or agency) In consideration of the catastrophic Climate Change-related events in (State, etc.), the nation and the whole Earth, and of the accelerated worsening of the indicators of Climate Change, such as CO2 levels in the atmosphere, global average air temperature rises and the melting of permanent ice sheets, (NAME OF DECLARATION ISSUER) Declares Climate Change a Major Disaster and calls for an official Climate Change Major Disaster Declaration by (NAME of target public official) for the immediate commitment of all the necessary State and Federal resources to RESTORE the Climate to a former beneficial equilibrium, and to implement the ADAPTATION work to minimize the impact of coming Climate Change-related events in (STATE, etc.).
