Why this petition matters

Started by Deborah Warner

More than five million families in California live less than a mile from an active oil or gas well, with drilling disproportionately concentrated in low-income and communities of color.

These communities suffer some of the worst air pollution in the nation. Asthma and cancers are prevalent in these vulnerable communities and research also shows that individuals living in heavily polluted areas have a higher risk of severe complications from COVID-19.

Yet, California continues to allow toxic oil and gas drilling to take place right next door to homes, schools, playgrounds and gardens. These drilling sites poison our air, our water, and the soil we grow our food in.

We must demand an end to our state government’s blind rejection of science-based facts about this hazard and take action to protect the health and well-being of every California citizen.

Now is our opportunity to stand up. CalGEM’s public health regulatory power is our state’s opportunity to right these wrongs and put California on the path to a healthy, low-carbon future.

We must call upon Governor Newsom, our state legislators and CalGEM to approve a 2500-ft. buffer between oil and gas operations and our homes, schools, and playgrounds. It is time to protect the interests of the Public they serve, not the special interests of the oil industry.

All Californians deserve to live, work, play and thrive in a safe environment.

Together we can make this happen.
