Does Eminent Domain Really Work? Save Our Trains!
The Issue
Does eminent domain really work? Eminent domain is the right of the government or its agents to expropriate private property for public use, with payment compensation. The problem with eminent domain is that the federal government decides the amount that the property is worth. Should the farmers recieve the compensation or should they recieve what they deserve? In California, Gov. Jerry Brown pushed foward with the high-speed rail project. The base line for the was $77 billion, now it has jumped up 20%($98 billion) in costs and it will finish by 2033. The train is going from Los Angeles to San Fransisco. The problem with the bullet train is that the construction is going to plow through farmland, which will dramatically decrease jobs for farmers. It will also lower the state of California's economic value because majority of the states economy is through farmland and crop growing.
The bullet train is a high-speed transport operator that can go in top speeds of 603 kph. Other countries like Japan has bullet trains and has pleas filed in HC farmers challenging land acquisition processing and California has a chance of going through the same situation. One of the elavated sections is under construction in Fresno. Why do we care? Fresno County is home to 1.88 million acres of the worlds most productive farmland with agricultural operations covering nearly half of the country's entire land base of 3.84 million acres. If this continues, farmland will decrease not just for California, it will also affect the U.S.
We also can't just disregard the project either. The high-speed train system can boost the economic value of a city, state, country, etc. Workers can come to find easy work. Goods can be shipped from point A to point B with barely anytime. With the bullet train, it can be beneficial for California's economic growth. Building bullet trains is a cheaper alternative than building and expanding airports. This project can create over 1,500 construction jobs due to the project in future years. The solution to appease for everyone is to figure out a way to build the high-speed trains underground or around the farmland so it doesn't take jobs away from the farmers.
Our group feel strongly about this plan because it can benefit both sides, creates a lot more jobs, and it can really boost an already economicly powerful state of California. At the end, it can really help people who live here and is affected by this if we implement this plan of building the bullet train under or around the farmland.
