Screen out harmful chemicals from products buybuy BABY sells

The Issue

To reach their full potential, babies need to grow up in healthy environments. When parents and other caregivers head to retail shops to buy baby products, they expect that the products being sold are made without harmful chemicals.

Despite regulations, market shifts, and public pressure, some products for babies and toddlers still contain chemicals that impact their health, contributing to asthma, learning, attention, and developmental disabilities, obesity, cancer, infertility, and more.

That's why a diverse group of organizations formed the Getting Ready for Baby campaign: to drive further changes to screen out harmful chemicals so parents don't have to worry.

buybuy BABY, now the only national retailer focused specifically on products for babies and toddlers, was once a leader – by acting on phthalates, vinyl, BPA, lead, cadmium, certain flame retardants, and triclosan before any laws required them to do so, and by crafting a "Restricted Substances List" of chemicals of concern for vendors. But in recent years, they’ve fallen behind. In the Retailer Report Card, they’ve received a D+ two years in a row.

Because they sell products especially for the nursery and for the care of babies and toddlers, buybuy BABY must resume their leadership path and give parents the peace of mind they deserve.

buybuy BABY, protect children by:

a. Establishing a timeline to ensure all padded products sold are made without any flame retardant chemicals.
b. Requiring third-party testing by vendors to demonstrate their products comply with your company's chemical restrictions.
c. Assessing buybuy BABY's Chemical Footprint, then setting and working toward other specific toxic reduction goals.
