Many people know the effects humans have on the planet. Humans have become smarter and made new innovations with technology to make their life easier and better. In the last 100 years, life expectancy in the United States has increased from 55 to 70 years. While their new innovations are great for humans, they are not so great for the planet and other species. Humans have made greenhouse gasses that heat up the earth to a level that is not safe in the long term. Humans are also cutting down trees which is known as deforestation and is a problem for many reasons including habitat loss and extinction. There are many ways to reduce the effects of climate change like buying an electric car and recycling, but for it to be effective almost everyone has to be doing it which can be done with the help of the government if they take action. There are still ways we can reduce the effects we have on the earth but we have to do something quickly or else it will be too late.

Greenhouse gasses let the light go through the atmosphere from the sun, but they do not let them reflect back out into space. Even before humans existed there were natural greenhouse gasses which are good for life because, without those, the earth would be too cold for most types of life. Ever since the industrial revolution, humans have started artificially releasing CO2  into the atmosphere which has been causing the earth to heat up to a level that is not safe. One of the effects of the release of these greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere is natural disasters. According to The Impact of Climate Change on Natural Disasters by NASA, “Global warming could affect storm formation by decreasing the temperature difference between the poles and the equator. That temperature difference fuels the mid-latitude storms affect the Earth’s most populated regions”. This quote shows that because of global warming there are going to be a lot more storms and they are going to be more deadly. The worst part of this is that these storms are going to affect the densest regions, where the most number of people live. For example, the 2008 North Indian Ocean cyclone season left more than 140,000 people dead and caused $14 billion in damage according to one source and if the effects of global warming weren’t as harsh, lives could’ve been saved. Humans are emitting more and more greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere which is indirectly causing more natural disasters that harm a lot of people.

Deforestation is the permanent removal of trees in an area for human use. People cut down trees for many reasons including to make space to grow crops, neighborhoods and for roads and logging so the wood can be used for making houses, furniture, and firewood. Cutting down trees disrupts the carbon cycle because trees naturally take in CO2 and other pollutants from the air and they also reduce the CO2 levels in the air. But ever since humans started cutting down trees as well so now when CO2 is released into the air, it stays there with nothing to purify it. Trees store some CO2 inside them and when they are cut down or burned, that CO2 goes into the air and acts as a greenhouse gas. According to the World Bank,” Between 1990 and 2016, the world lost 502,000 square miles (1.3 million square kilometers) of forest”. If humans start planting more trees and stop cutting them down, global warming will be a lot easier to fight. Deforestation is also bad for the earth because it causes extinction in animals due to habitat loss. Many animal and plant species live in rainforests and when trees in the rainforest are cut down, it also kills all those plant species. The animals that live in those rainforests have nowhere to live and die due to a result of deforestation. We need to stop deforestation to help out the earth and prevent many species from going extinct.

There are still many ways we can stop the earth from getting damaged too much but we have to take action now before it’s too late. One way we can help is by recycling. What recycling does is that when you put your recyclable waste to recycle, your local waste factory turns it back into raw form and uses it to create new products. If everyone recycled just a single edition of The New York Times, we could save 75,000 trees. The earth has a limited amount of natural resources which we are using up day by day and before we’ll know it, they will all be gone. Recycling can help this because by recycling we can try to use our resources once again and not have to take them from the earth.

Humans are affecting the earth in many ways every single day in many ways including releasing greenhouse gases into the air which is causing global warming. Global warming is hurting the planet and humans in ways it has never done before. Global Warming has caused natural disasters to be stronger than ever before which harms humans. Humans are cutting down trees day by day which makes global warming harder and harder to deal with. There are some ways to stop global warming and save the earth. One way is to start recycling. We need more people to start recycling and helping the earth because it will only help them in the end. We need to do something fast to save the planet before it is too late.
