Monday June 29th 2020 Burlington City Council is looking to defund the Burlington Police Department by 30%. If this passes, the Burlington Police Department will cut 18 additional officers on top of the 13 officers that have already been frozen. What this means for the city of Burlington is response time will take longer, staffing hardship will mean officers not responding to 911 calls of certain crimes, no more foot patrols in the city and there would be no police prescence to deter crime. It would take officers off the streets from 2am until 7am leaving the community left to deal with crime themselves. Someone breaks into your house, sexual assaults, drug overdoses/drug crime, accidents etc. Officers won’t be there to help you or protect you! Do you feel comfortable not having protection during these times? Do you feel punishing many great officers who truly wear the badge to protect and serve because of one officers horrible choice? How can the biggest municipality in Vermont not be funded to protect its city?! How is that the answer! Taking them away is only going to start another problem and that’s is a higher rise in crime with no officers to respond. Our beautiful city turned upside down.
