So BUPA have announced today that they will offer doctors the ability to offer a no-gap policy only for elective or booked admissions in a Public Hospital! Which is a great win but the issues are far deeper.
For instance, if you come to a hospital in an emergency or unplanned admission, perhaps seeking the help of your specialist or need urgent care and want to choose your own specialist who knows you or want to use your Private Health Insurance...guess what you'll still be slugged with the gap which could amount from hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands of dollars! This is completely unscrupulous and unethical! To allow elective planned admissions under your specialist to have no gap payments whilst on the other hand when people need help the most in an emergency to slug them the difference. This is one of the sole reasons many Australian's have Private Health Insurance. So that they can see their own specialist in the public system when they need them the most. BUPA's corporate greed and its unwillingness to pay the Medicare Benefits Scheme (MBS) and pass on the gap onto the sick and vulnerable in an emergency is almost unconscionable.
Dr Drawyne Crombie, BUPA Managing Director: “If members come in and they’re in an emergency or acute situation and they don’t get to choose their doctor, then the standard Medicare arrangements will operate.”
This is the lowest of corporate greed. BUPA a multi-billion dollar multinational company with record profits and premiums. BUPA is taking the fundamental ethical right of Autonomy of choice from Australian families, the elderly and chronically unwell the ability to use their private health insurance; and choice to see their own specialist in an Emergency/Urgent situation to avoid paying the MBS and make another quick dollar without concern.
