Problem
John has a long history of abuse on television and it’s time to stop giving him a platform. Starting on the Real World Key West, he mercilessly mocked and harassed a gay roommate, then going to every season on the Challenge, where he has consistently used the R-word, ridiculed women for their looks and physical abilities, was complicit in the rape of a costar, bullied countless costars for sexual orientation, gender, race, etc. He is constantly protected and uplifted by Bunim-Murray, offering him a role every season despite his disgusting actions. Not only are his own actions being rewarded by not receiving any repercussions, but the same behaviors are being reinforced in viewers who are taught that these actions are okay. As a victim of sexual assault I can only speak for myself, but I feel a huge disrespect and disservice by this show that I love. The fact that he gets to come on time and time again and spew such hatred for women and receive the attention, praise, and money that he does, despite being so incredibly abusive, just reinforces the denigrating feelings of the abuser always getting away with abuse, the abuser always having more power, and the victim not being believed or protected. I love the Challenge so much, especially the inspiring stories of many challengers overcoming obstacles, but by John continuing to be protected by the show I feel the message being sent is that Bunim-Murray does not care about the victim, and why should I support a show that so obviously does not care about me? Not only this, but to hear his extremely demeaning language is very anxiety-provoking and heart wrenching. Please remove John, please stop giving him and his fans a platform to spew hate and abuse and silence victims everywhere.
