Hi Petition Supporters,
We have amassed 1000 signatures on our paper version of this petition, plus 1100+ digital signatures.
We have decided to keep this petition ongoing, mainly to keep you informed of what is happening.
We have twice written to the new Minister for Homelessness, Matthew Swinbourn, requesting a meeting to discuss an emergency solution to the homeless crisis in a shelter. The second letter includes comments from you, the petitioners.
Minister Swinbourn replied 3 hours after I had sent the second letter. You can find these three letters on our fb page: Bunbury Addressing Homelessness Working Group - see discussion and featured tabs.
You will note that there is no offer of a meeting with us, members of our Bunbury community who care for homeless people.
We will be responding in due course. In the meantime, we would be interested in your thoughts about the lack of willingness on the part of Government to dialogue on this pressing matter. Please leave your thoughts on our fb page for collection and sharing.
Also, yesterday, before the rain, I went for a walk and saw something very troubling. On the right, there were several well-crafted “invisible” rough shelters. On the left, there were well-appointed houses.
Intown Centre's David Bailey also recently commented on the local ABC radio about the growing numbers of homelessness in our city: “There are people living on footpaths... who would have thought... we would be stepping over people in little old Bunbury. …Sadly, we are catching up with the rest of the world, but we are doing it very quickly”.
Let's continue to press ahead to secure shelter for members of our community who are homeless.
