March 16, 2024:  Our grassroots advocacy work has paid off. We’ve been advocating since 2019 for the BSG to be an innovative new model for how skateparks can bring communities together. 

Our vision: A beautifully designed green space that includes a world class skatepark for everyone from beginners to pros in a safe green park. An environment that can host multiple types of recreational sports, education, and places for art and culture in an outdoor learning space while promoting sustainability. A park for the entire community, spanning all cultures and identities, coming together to enjoy skateboarding and more.  As a grassroots initiative we have been hosting skate meet-ups, park clean ups, gardening and planting events, art, culture and mural making projects, and community fundraising events to help our neighbors in need.  We have ignited our community of skateboarders, and non skateboarders alike in providing an inclusive experience as we connect, learn, and grow together.

The announcement of the funding of The Brooklyn Skate Garden came from The Mayor's Office on Jan 24, 2024 and is supported by the NYC Parks Department, The NYC Economic Development Corporation, Brooklyn Borough President, Antonio Reynoso, CM D39 Shahana Hanif & CM D35 Crystal Hudson who all pledged funding of almost 12M to make our project a reality with the help and collaboration of the Skate Park Project. 

BSG also succeeded in the participatory budgeting process and was determined to be a community need.  The BSG Project at Mount Prospect Park transcends all district boundaries and is for the public good and for all NYC residents enjoyment and a park for the whole city. While we are still early in the process, and no official design has been planned yet, we are excited to engage with the community as we plan this amazing SkateGARDEN.

The BSG will follow NYC Parks' community engagement protocol for capital projects. The community will have many opportunities to participate and help shape the project. The design will be developed in a collaborative way, emphasizing community engagement.
