Build a skate park in Kariega for positive youth engagement
The Issue
A few months ago, my boyfriend Pablo and I were skating around Kariega, as is our usual routine. We're both passionate skaters, but street skating comes with its own set of challenges – traffic, potential accidents with pedestrians, and the ever-present fear of having our boards confiscated by cops just because we're trying to skate freely. One thing became clear to us: Kariega needs a designated skate park.
The youth in our community often find themselves with little to do, and the streets don't offer much except trouble. Without safe and engaging spaces, many kids turn to things like drugs, theft, or even violence. A skate park isn't just a place to skate; it's a safe haven, a community hub, a spot where young people can forge friendships and develop new skills. It's a place that can redirect the energy of youth towards something positive and inspire them to stay out of trouble and remain in school.
The location we have in mind is perfect: across Willow Dam, where an old abandoned gas station once stood, offering ample space. Building a skate park here does more than just provide a simple recreational spot; it showcases the talent in our community, young and old alike. Skating is not just a hobby; it's a sport, an art form, and a way of life for many. This space will encourage those with potential to nurture their talents and possibly transform their lives.
Moreover, constructing a skate park will contribute to infrastructure improvements, like better-paved streets and less flood damage, which the community desperately needs. This development project could serve as a catalyst for more community enhancements, benefiting everyone in Kariega.
We call upon our local authorities and the community to join hands in making this dream a reality. With your support, we can build a space that not only keeps our youth engaged and away from harm but also celebrates the vibrant culture of skating we all cherish.
Sign this petition and help us create a better future for the youth of Kariega. Together, we can make this skate park a reality and transform our community for the better.
