Build a permanent ice rink in Cornwall
The Issue
Cornwall is in desperate need of a permanent ice rink. Since the closure of the Plymouth Pavilions ice rink in 2022, the nearest rink available to us is in Bristol, leaving many Cornish residents and tourists without a local venue to enjoy this wonderful activity. Ice skating is a beloved seasonal tradition for many in Cornwall each winter, so why should this only be accessible during the cold months?
The absence of a local ice rink denies many families and individuals the joy and benefits of ice skating outside of winter, effectively limiting recreational options, regardless of the weather. A permanent ice rink in Cornwall would not only serve as a year-round attraction but would also pave the way for economic and social development:
1. **Job Creation:** With a new ice rink, jobs will be generated in construction, operation, maintenance, and management. The hospitality and retail sectors surrounding the rink will also benefit, leading to a boost in local employment.
2. **Community Hub:** The rink would provide a family-friendly venue for locals and visitors, fostering community spirit. It would offer a safe and enjoyable place for residents and tourists to gather, especially on those typical wet and dreary Cornish days.
3. **Sports Development:** Establishing a permanent rink would allow for the creation of a Cornish ice hockey team, providing an opportunity to compete at a national level. This would not only promote sports and a healthy lifestyle among young people but would also bring pride and recognition to Cornwall on a larger stage.
Cornwall’s lack of an ice rink is not just an inconvenience; it’s a missed opportunity for cultural enrichment, economic growth, and communal joy. We urge local authorities and potential investors to come together to give Cornwall the permanent ice rink it deserves. This project will transform the recreational landscape of our beloved region.
Join us in calling for the establishment of a permanent ice rink in Cornwall, so we can experience the joy and benefits of ice skating all year round. Please sign this petition to show your support and help us bring this vital facility to life in our community. Together, we can make a lasting impact.
