Your strong support for the Oxford Street East Cycleway is still needed!

Thank you to everyone who has joined our campaign to Build a better Oxford Street!

Progress has been very slow but planning work continues for the upgrade of Oxford Street between Taylor Square and Centennial Gates.

The Public Domain and Activation Strategy was finally published in November 2025 with new images and plans of key public space upgrades. Strong actions to revitalise the street will help create a future Oxford Street that is better for everyone.

A design team has been selected after a lengthy tender process and detailed design is underway. Both consultants are very experienced with designing cycleway projects in central Sydney. and we are confident that the project is in good hands.

Funding for construction has not yet been confirmed. However, the REF is expected to be on public exhibition by the end of 2026.

Of course, change is always hard and some residents and businesses are still very anxious about the cycleway.  There are concerns about parking, access and disruption during construction and the project team is working vey hard to minimise any negative impacts.

Some detractors continue to use misinformation and false claims in an attempt to stall the project. Resident groups have joined forces as the Paddington Project to oppose the cycleway using disingenuous and flawed arguments. You may have seen the leaflets.

Bicycle NSW has worked closely with local Bicycle User Group BIKEast to develop positive sentiment so that decision-makers can confidently move forward with the project. 

Much of the advocacy work is not seen publicly, but it is making a difference and ensures the noisy minority voice isn't cutting through.  Transport for NSW and decision-makers, including local MPs, remain firmly behind the project.   

More support, both silent and vocal, is always helpful.

Are you able to get more involved? BIKEast co-ordinates high-visibility campaigning activities to build local support for the cycleway. Volunteers are needed to help with door-knocking and leafleting. If you can help, please contact the team. BIKEast meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month, details on Meetup. 

A letter or email the Transport for NSW project team, the Transport Minister and local MPs would also make a difference!

Meanwhile, the Oxford Street West Cycleway goes from strength to strength, demonstrating the huge demand for safe cycling infrastructure from Sydney's East. We celebrated one million rides on 2nd July, just 11 months after the ribbon was cut. The peak day so far was 30th April with 4836 riders.  It is by far the busiest cycleway in the city.

The data shows that cycling is booming in Sydney. The Oxford Street East Cycleway is a critical missing link in the bike network that we hope to see filled as soon as possible!
