Building on the legacy of David Bowie’s strong connection with Aylesbury, Friars Aylesbury is launching a new campaign to change the name of Aylesbury to Aylesbowie.

Following the untimely death of David Bowie on 10 January 2016 a groundswell of opinion surfaced in Buckinghamshire England to celebrate his art in a permanent way, in recognition of the strong connection he had with music club Friars Aylesbury.

Bowie performed the world debuts of two of the most iconic albums of the 20th Century ‘Hunky Dory’ and ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’ at Friars Aylesbury in 1971/72. He formed the Spiders from Mars in the tiny Friars dressing room and referenced Aylesbury Market Square in the first line of ‘Five Years’. “Pushing through the Market Square so many mothers sighing”

Aylesbury’s Market Square will be the home of the first statue of David Bowie in the world which will be unveiled on Sunday March 25th at 2.00pm.

In the evening on 25th March there will be a special Bowie Statue Fundraiser concert at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre featuring Marillion, Howard Jones, John Otway and the Dung Beatles. Tickets available from www.atgtickets.com or ticketmaster.

We live in an era of constant change. Throughout history towns and cities have had their names changed. e.g. New York used to be called New Amsterdam. The Bowie statue will give an enormous boost to tourism in the area so please join us in calling for the town to be renamed Aylesbowie.
