The Issue

·    On September 18th, 2015 young Alex Gervais died from falling though a 4th story hotel window. Alex was in the care of the provincial government at the time. Alex was housed in the hotel for three months after the province closed 23 group homes.

·    Premier Chisty Clark made public statements laying blame before any investigation was started and that no public inquiry would be conducted.

·    On July 14, 2015, the Honourable Justice Mr. Walker issued his reasons for judgement in J.P. v. British Columbia (Children and Family Development). The court concluded, “The Province is liable for misfeasance, breach of the standard of care, and breach of the fiduciary duty on the part of the Director and her agents.”

·    The Christy Clark government did not take action to hold these social workers accountable for breach of duty. Instead, this government decided to appeal the Supreme Court of BC decision. The Premier and Minister of Children and Family Development has available to it all of the facts and circumstances and they refused to hold the MCFD Director and Social workers accountable.

·    Premier Christy Clark has poisoned the process which prevents the Minstry of Children and Family Development from conducting a fair and impartial investigation.

·    The province only investigates one out of every ten child/youth deaths.

·    The Representative for Children & Youth, an Officer of the BC Legislature, has a mandate to conduct independent investigations of the deaths of children in government care.

·    The grieving Gervais family is calling for an independent investigation.

·    Please support the call to Premier Christy Clark, Minister Cadieux and the  Select Standing Committee on Children and Youth for in independent investigation of the untimely death of young Alex Grevais by the Representative for Children and Youth Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond.
