Canadians Against the B.C. Speculation Tax — Go Fund Me Campaign

Below, please see a letter from a fellow petition signatory. May 10, 2018 Friends, I’m writing today about steps being taken to address the new B.C. Speculation Tax, which was unveiled in February 2018 and will require property owners to pay a levy on vacant homes in specific jurisdictions, including: Kelowna, West Kelowna, Metro Vancouver, Capital Regional District, Nanaimo-Lantzville, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Mission. Housing affordability is a serious issue in B.C., but the reality is the proposed tax does little to address actual speculation. It does, however, harm the very communities it is supposed to protect – communities that have opened their doors to the rest of Canada and grown stronger because of it. In response to the new tax, we are forming the Canadians Against the B.C. Speculation Tax – a coalition of Canadian residents urging the B.C. government to rethink this misguided policy before it does irreparable harm. We’ll be doing this through a sophisticated advocacy campaign aimed at raising broader awareness around the proposed tax and its consequences, and by providing a platform for Canadians from all provinces to express their concerns to the B.C. government. But we need your help. Campaigns of this nature, while powerful and effective, require substantial budget to have a meaningful impact.
