URGENT: Save Bulimba Creek from an Approved Development at 161/161A Underwood Road, Eight Mile Plain

Brisbane City Council has long recognised the importance of protecting Bulimba Creek. In 1998, Council developed the Bulimba Creek Catchment Plan. Also, in 2008, the Kuraby Local Plan designated the land in question as a “waterway corridor” as well as a “habitat areas and ecological corridor.” In the current Brisbane City Plan 2014, the land is designated as rural zone and within High Ecological Significance and Creek and waterway corridor overlays. It was clearly considered by Council to be unique and significant natural asset to be conserved and protected. A map is attached for your information. In 2011, Brisbane City Council acquired land at 243 Underwood Road which is located along the main tributary of upper Bulimba Creek waterway corridor because it provides habitat for threatened native species, such as raptors, wallabies and koalas. Unlike 161/161A Underwood Road, this particular land, although acquired for environmental reasons, was not actually even a designated “habitat areas and ecological corridor”. Why is 161/161A Underwood Road not also being protected, especially given that it was actually designated by Council as a “habitat areas and ecological corridor”? Residents are calling on the Queensland Government to put in place urgent and necessary measures to protect this valuable natural asset. Surely the State Government or Brisbane City Council own more appropriate land in the district that could be used for this development without compromising our beautiful unique natural environment the subject site possesses? Surely Brisbane City Council could use the Bushland Protection Levy, as it did with 243 Underwood Road, to protect this valuable natural asset?
