A few weeks ago I rode my bike into town to talk to the folks at the restaurants to see if I should start playing again. They all said they'd love to have live music again but they weren't sure anyone would hear me from this new spot I've been given.
Then I went across the street and looked my spot over and noticed they put a bench right where I normally set up. And when I looked across the street I noticed they'd set up a line of tall bushes on the side walk that would keep the dinners from seeing me. And I was livid because I thought these things were done deliberately to make playing there that much more difficult for me.
A little while later with a clearer head I realized how that idea was kind of silly. But I also realized if this is the state of mind playing in downtown Freehold puts me in, then I don't need to play there anymore.
The fact is this new spot I've been given is outright depressing. Seeing West Main St. between me and the people at the restaurants is this big visual example of how I'm no longer welcome there. Also after all the drama of applying for permits, having them denied, then applying again, after all the lies told to me and about me, the joyfulness I felt downtown is now gone.
I used to go bouncing downstairs, load up my gear onto my bike trailer, and ride into town with a smile on my face. I'd be smiling because I knew I'd be enjoying the bustle of people walking by me while I play. I'd be enjoying the smiles and compliments I'd get, I'd be enjoying the smell coming from Federici's kitchen. And yes, I'd be enjoying the money in my tip bucket. But that enjoyment is gone now.
As of right now I don't plan to apply for a permit next year. Those years I spent playing downtown freehold were great. But it's all over now. I'd like to thank all those friendly faces who made those sunny afternoons soo enjoyable.
