Dear Friends of Wild Horses and Burros,
Right now wild horses and burros need your help to STOP the feds from abusing wild captives with no shelter from extreme weather. More roundups will only subject more wild horses to more cruelty in the hands of the government. Please help the voiceless wild horses and burros. Here are 5 Actions you can take now:
1.) Share out the petition Http://www.change.org/p/defund-and-stop-the-wild-horse-burro-roundups to your friends asking them to Sign the Petition to PROTECT wild horses and burros NOT TERRORIZE them with HELICOPTERS to DRUG them or REMOVE them. Many do end up going to SLAUGHTER! Scientific studies have proven PZP is STERILIZING WILD MARES. You can read about the Princeton study here: www.ProtectMustangs.org
2.) Share widely the Petition for Emergency Shelter and Shade: http://www.change.org/p/bring-emergency-shelter-and-shade-to-captive-wild-horses-and-burros Ask your friends to sign it and share widely. Share it in groups online too!
3.) Join the Walking Billboard Campaign to "STOP THE ROUNDUPS! NEVADA 2014" Get your T-Shirts here: https://www.booster.com/protect-mustangs-nevada Wear the t-shirts, gift them and talk with people to raise public awareness to STOP the Wild Horse Wipeout!
4.) Meet with your elected officials and write them (http://www.contactingthecongress.org) to request they intervene to STOP the ROUNDUPS and STOP Drugging wild horses with RESTRICTED USE PESTICIDES. According to Scientists the drug being pushed on native wild horses, PZP, causes sterility. Our icons of freedom must not be used for research for an eventual human immunocontraceptive! Read about immunocontraceptives for women here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18031108 Yes when you follow the money that’s where all this leads. Cheap research to perfect a human contraceptive only it’s not perfect and ovaries are damaged—sterility is the result and our wild mares are used in this big EXPERIMENT! Disgusting.
5.) Run with the solution—SCIENCE. There is no quick fix to management because the scientific studies haven’t been done. Why because the feds want to keep business as usual. They favor big business over wild horses and burros on public land. It’s time for science! Sign and share the Petition for a 10 Year Moratorium on Roundups for Recovery and Studies: https://www.change.org/p/sally-jewell-urgent-grant-a-10-year-moratorium-on-wild-horse-roundups-for-recovery-and-studies "Studies" involve observation and are different from experiments. Jane Goodall did a lot of studies. She was a true champion for animals in the wild.
Wild horses are a native species and must be saved!
Recently Craig Downer published the peer reviewed paper titled The Horse and Burro as Positively Contributing Returned Natives in North America here: http://www.sciencepublishinggroup.com/journal/paperinfo.aspx?journalid=118&doi=10.11648/j.ajls.20140201.12
According to a press release from National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released June 5, 2013, "The U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) current practice of removing free-ranging horses from public lands promotes a high population growth rate, and maintaining them in long-term holding facilities is both economically unsustainable and incongruent with public expectations, says a new report by the National Research Council."
The NAS report states there is "no evidence" of overpopulation. Only tobacco science and spin backs up BLM's population claim to justify roundups and fertility control/sterilizations. . .
PZP—MADE FROM PIG OVARIES—is an EPA approved RESTRICTED-USE PESTICIDE that sterilizes wild horses after multiple use so it's risky for long-term herd survival. See information here: http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/chem_search/reg_actions/pending/fs_PC-176603_01-Jan-12.pdf and www.ProtectMustangs.org
Giving PZP to wild mares also results in foals being born late in the fall or winter and some die because they are too little to make it through a harsh winter. 2 foals have been born this fall in the Pryors after aggressive PZP was used on the herd. We pray they make it through the harsh winter.
Drug research trials are big business. Left unchallenged, wild horses and burros will continue to be lab rats for human fertility control research. This exploitation must stop!
We request an immediate halt to roundups for scientific population studies and studies on holistic management before it's too late.
Thank you for taking action today to SAVE and PROTECT America’s wild horses and burros. They need you to be their champion!
Many blessings,
Anne
