The Issue

My family and I have been victims of violent crime more than once in South Africa. The sense of security and justice that should be a basic human right has been repeatedly shattered for us and countless others. It’s time we take a stand against the rampant violence that tears apart our communities and threatens our well-being.

The rising tide of violent crime and crimes against women has reached a critical point in our country. According to the South African Police Service, the 2022/2023 financial year saw over 21,000 murders and significant spikes in sexual assaults and other serious offenses. We urgently need strong measures to counteract this wave of violence and protect our citizens.

Reintroducing the death penalty for extreme violent crimes, specifically those against women and children, can serve as a potent deterrent, offering a means of prevention by instilling a fear of ultimate retribution. Though controversial, the death penalty remains an effective deterrent in several countries, contributing to lower violent crime rates.

While opponents of the death penalty argue against its moral and ethical implications, we must prioritize the safety of our people. The prevailing justice system has proven ineffective at curbing the increase in violent crime. Victims and their families remain with little solace and even lesser hope for a safer future.

This petition calls on the South African government to seriously consider the reinstatement of the death penalty. It is imperative we take all necessary measures to ensure justice and provide safety for every citizen.

Please sign this petition to show support for a safer South Africa. Together, we can pressure our lawmakers to take decisive action against violent crime.
