Reprimand fully Cllr Ben Duncan for branding UK Armed Forces Personnel "killers", and demand his resignation.

The Issue

Ben Duncan, a Green Councillor serving on Brighton and Hove City Council, took to Twitter to label UK Armed Service personnel "Killers".

It is one thing to question the  legitimacy of going to war. It is quite another to insult the men and women who sacrifice life and limb so that we enjoy peace, freedom of speech and democracy. 

Please send a message to the Brighton and Hove Green Party, Caroline Lucas (Green MP for Brighton Pavilion), Davy Jones (Green Parliamentary Candidate for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven), Natalie Bennett, Leader, Green Party of England and Wales,  and Cllr Duncan's employer, Jean Lambert (Green MEP for London) by signing this petition.

“I do not support or condone the personal remarks of Ben Duncan made in relation to Armed Forces Day. His comments do not reflect Green Party policy or my own views. While I have questioned Government decisions about the deployment of British military personnel, I have never doubted the commitment and courage of those serving in the forces. I also realise the enormous risks and pressure that they and their loved ones suffer as a result of that service and am a supporter of Liberty's campaign for justice for those serving in our Armed Forces. (Liberty has been representing the families of several soldiers who have been failed by the current system, and is calling for a fairer and more independent military justice system. See http://www.liberty-human-rights.org.uk/campaigning/military-justice.) Disciplinary proceedings have been started against Mr Duncan by his local party. However, as is the usual case for responsible employers, I am not prepared to discuss individual personnel matters publicly. “ Thank you for raising your concerns about a tweet sent by Cllr Ben Duncan. As I made clear when I first became aware of the tweet, I find Cllr Duncan’s actions completely unacceptable. I immediately called on him to apologise for the offence and distress he has caused. I also called on the local Green party to take disciplinary action and that process in now underway. I have demanded that Cllr Duncan stand down as a Green councillor too. I have a huge appreciation for the role played by the individual men and women who belong to our armed forces. Cllr Duncan’s comments do not reflect the Green Party’s position or mine. Although my own role is completely separate from that of the City Council and its councillors, I’d like to use this opportunity to offer my own sincere apologies for the understandable anger and distress Cllr Duncan’s insensitive comments have caused.
