Brigham Young University - Idaho is a church institution widely known for its excellent academic standing, wholesome environment, and most importantly - its cultural events, led by student associations. BYU-Idaho Student Associations has united people from all over the world for a very long time. It's allowed those of the same and of diverse cultures to bond, form friendships, and most importantly - to unite. In the BYU-Idaho mission statement it says:
"Brigham Young University-Idaho was founded and is supported and guided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its mission is to develop disciples of Jesus Christ who are leaders in their homes, the Church, and their communities. The university does this by:
- Building testimonies of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and encouraging living its principles.
- Providing a quality education for students of diverse interests and abilities.
- Preparing students for lifelong learning, for employment, and for their roles as citizens and parents.
- Maintaining a wholesome academic, cultural, social, and spiritual environment."
The university has done a fine job of keeping the balance between an academic, spiritual, and a social cultural environment. We have academic societies, programs, and higher-level classes to challenge us. For the spiritual part, we have our regular church meetings, family home evenings, devotionals, firesides, and the honor code. But most importantly, we had the cultural part of BYU-Idaho which Student Associations made up a large part of.
In conclusion, in such a modern culturally divided society, we need unity more than ever. Removing Student Associations could perpetually divide us when what we need as a country, now more than ever, is undividedness, an acceptance of our growing diversity. And it is through our school where we can make a difference.
