Remove the racist and insensitive images celebrating slavery from your product lines NOW

The Issue

An incredibly offensive line of home furnishing products and prints depicting British slave ships and black slaves has been produced by Bridgeman Images, Granger Art on Demand*, Daniel Hagerman, Johan Moritz Rugendas and Fineartamerica.com. These are currently on sale with fineartamerica.com and other woefully ignorant retailers.

Not only are these images in incredibly poor taste, they defecate on the incredibly painful history, genocide and holocaust of black people worldwide and via their line of soft furnishings (throw, pillows etc.) infer that this is a point in history worth being proud of. Getty Images state that these images should not be for commercial use.

We also note that they have ONLY chosen to single out Black people and therefore encouraging a stereotypical and widely perpetuated LIE that suggests that chattel slavery is the ONLY legacy for Black people when in fact we had quite a rich history before we were stolen from the shores of Africa and treated as animals. We note that images of other holocausts cannot be found in soft furnishing capacities.

We the people would like:

  • This product line removed and destroyed IMMEDIATELY and an apology issued for the offence caused from all the aforementioned people named above.
  • We would also like all funds generated from any sales from these horrific images to be donated towards black charities and black museums worldwide.

Both retailers and manufacturers need to acknowledge that these images and the products that they have been manufactured on can ONLY appeal to those who are inherently racist in nature and that these images only serve to line the pockets of companies at the expense of black people (and their pain), We need to of educate the public so that history does not repeat itself.
