Dear Mr. Ponce,
My name is Maria Munoz, and I have been a resident of Brickell Key for the past 7 years.
On behalf of hundreds of Brickell Key families I would like to bring to your attention the consequences of the decisions that the BKMA has recently taken. For those of us who are active members of this community there is a growing concern that the prohibition of activities in the Brickell Key parks is threatening the fragile balance of this wonderful Community.
As you can see in the link below, in the last 48 hours more than 650 people have signed a petition to authorize the continued use of the Brickell Key parks for children activities like soccer, karate, flamenco, dance, yoga, etc
I have also included the list of signatories and their comments in this email for your review.
These are extraordinary times, and we all have to make an effort to adapt to the circumstances and find the right balance. What we are asking for is very simple. Given that Residents pay sizable fees for the maintenance of parks and common areas, we expect our children to have the right to use them. We are not against a reasonable set of guidelines, but we do not accept an outright ban. If shops, restaurants and even a hotel can remain fully operational, we don’t see any reason why park activities should be suspended.
We believe that groups of up to 10 kids guided by an instructor sponsored by a Resident should be allowed in both parks during regular hours. We also believe that BK security personnel should suffice to monitor the compliance of these guidelines, and report any incident if necessary. So far we are not aware of any violent incident in the Brickell Key parks that justifies the involvement of several police officers to oversee games and activities.
Lastly, let me remind you that most of us joined this Community with the understanding that families are welcomed and allowed to raise their kids in a healthy, outdoor, peaceful environment. Hopefully, this is still the case, and this was just an unfortunate decision with unintended consequences.
Mr. Ponce, let’s work together to quickly restore the normal course of park activities and avoid any lasting damage to this outstanding Community.
Best regards,
María Muñoz
PS: I am sharing this communication with the +650 signatories of the petition, and I will share with them your response.
