Update:

In July 2016, Brent Council cabinet decided to knock down both the Granville and the Carlton Centres. At a cabinet meeting this November that decision was POSTPONED.

However, the buildings are still threatened by either demolition for unaffordable housing or being turned into high cost business rental space.

Please sign below urging Brent Council to: ENSURE THE GRANVILLE AND CARLTON CENTRES ARE RENEWED AND KEPT IN PERPETUITY AS COMMUNITY SPACES FOR THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH KILBURN!

------

This July, Brent Council cabinet decided to knock down both the Granville  and the Carlton Centre. If this goes ahead, this will:

X Destroy the ONLY heritage site in the area! The Granville and Carlton have been serving the community for over 100 years and are one of the only community spaces left in South Kilburn. They carry the history of the area providing a distinct sense of neighbourhood and pride for the communities of South Kilburn.

X Displace local community activities like The Granville Community Kitchen, which has been feeding local families and vulnerable people every week.

Brent Council does not need to knock down the Granville. In fact, the Greater London Assembly already approved a plan to refurbish the Granville for community use. Brent Council seems to have turned its back on this GLA-approved plan and has decided to demolish the buildings instead.

Brent Council has attempted to rubbish the buildings by arguing that the Granville is “underutilised”. Our video tells a different story. Granville, to quote one user of the building Riham, is “a complete centre” that has served the community in many different ways: this building has hosted weddings, christenings, zumba classes, first aid courses, home education classes, community kitchens, nursery and youth activities and more in its time.

However, Brent Council cut funding to youth services in March 2016. If the Granville is underutilised now, it is because of Brent Council's policies. Regardless, when Brent Youth Service left this building, as a community, we continue to  use these spaces. We feed hundreds of local families a week, healthy and nutritious meals. But not only that, the kitchen has been a space for people to connect and be together. It also ran dance, music and cooking classes 2 days a week in the summer for over 85 local children and young people with the help of the John's Lyons Charity showing the need for local community activities.

Brent Council is willing to destroy all of this to build housing that South Kilburn residents will never be able to afford.

We demand that Brent Council listens to its residents and sticks to the GLA-approved plan to keep  the Granville and Carlton Centres.
